"A couple of days around Højer, September 2008"

Google Image showing location of Højer, a small town on the edge of the marsh land and the tidal areas feeding millions of migrant birds in the Spring and in the Fall.

Biking the marsh. (På cykel i marsken.)

Lots of sheep and cattle. (Masser af får og kvæg.)

Shallow lake behind the outer dike. (Sø bag udvendige dige.)

Lunch in a German Inn. (Frokost på en tysk kro.)

Main street in Møgeltønder, a town in the marsh. (Hovedgaden i Møgeltønder.)

The main gate to Schackenborg castle where Princess Mary's brother in law, Prince Joachim, lives with Princess Marie. (Hovedindgangen til Schackenborg Slot.)

Sunset over the marsh (while watching "Black Sun", thousands of starlings landing in the reeds to sleep.) (Solnedgang over marsken mens vi ser på "Sort Sol".)

"Black Sun", or "cloud" of starlings before landing in the reeds.

Morning mist over the boat place in Vidåen river right next to the small fisher house we stayed in. (Morgentåge over bådpladsen i Vidåen ved Højer.)

The small fisher house we stayed in. (Fiskerhuset som vi boede i.)

The ruin of Trøjborg castle.

Grete standing next to the flood marking pillar on the bank of Vidåen river. The rings on the pillar mark historic flooding levels. The second topmost ring marks the flood of 1976 which nearly broke through the old dike in the background. This caused a new outer dike to be built. (Søjlen for oversvømmelser ved Højer sluse.)

Biking north along the outer dike. The lagoon and the marsh are to the right. (På cykel nordpå langs det fremskudte dige.)

On the way home we took a detour to Frederiksstad in North Germany. (Fra torvet i Frederiksstad i Slesvig.)

Lunch before driving home. (Frokost før hjemturen.)
